It was a cold blustery January night in Pueblo Colorado, the wind howled, parking was difficult, shoes and boots fought the snow and ice built up on the sideways.
But we had a great crowd show up for Green Drinks Pueblo Style! Approx 30 people showed up to learn, discuss and network at the Gold Dust on Union. Our guest speakers were from the Pueblo Health Department they came to teach us about the challenges of recycling, specially plastics.
With the current economy it’s difficult to get a good price of the sale of plastics. And with the cost of transporting plastics it no longer makes sense to try. Only with the help of local government will we find a solution to this problem.
What can local government do?
Store the plastic for now seems to be the best answer. Once a significant amount of plastic is collected and bundled the price of plastic should have turned around to where communities can once again make money with the project. Bundling seems to be a key issue with plastic recycling. Think about the last time you took a bag or box to the recycle center. Plastic is mostly containers, containers take up space and need to be flattened and condensed down, or bundled.
