Green Drinks Pueblo Style : January ‘09

January 29, 2009

It was a cold blustery January night in Pueblo Colorado, the wind howled, parking was difficult, shoes and boots fought the snow and ice built up on the sideways.

But we had a great crowd show up for Green Drinks Pueblo Style! Approx 30 people showed up to learn, discuss and network at the Gold Dust on Union. Our guest speakers were from the Pueblo Health Department they came to teach us about the challenges of recycling, specially plastics.

With the current economy it’s difficult to get a good price of the sale of plastics. And with the cost of transporting plastics it no longer makes sense to try. Only with the help of local government will we find a solution to this problem.

What can local government do?

Store the plastic for now seems to be the best answer. Once a significant amount of plastic is collected and bundled the price of plastic should have turned around to where communities can once again make money with the project. Bundling seems to be a key issue with plastic recycling. Think about the last time you took a bag or box to the recycle center. Plastic is mostly containers, containers take up space and need to be flattened and condensed down, or bundled.

McKenzie Junction Colorado

February 12, 2008

McKenzie Junction Colorado

McKenzie Junction sits at the top on Hard Scrabble between Wetmore and Westcliffe. From there you can head south toward Bishops Castle and Rye. It is literally a cross roads for people to meet up, bike rides to start and animals to stop traffic. McKenzie sits in Custer County and in the San Isabel Forest. Every where you look are views of Hardsrcabble Creek, Granite Walls and wild life. Normally not a destination but a point to travel thru or around, McKenzie Junction is a beautiful place to stop and enjoy the Wet Mountains.

Mutual admiration society

For all who are new here to Active Rain, a little encouragement. While some of us have as many points as we will ever need, there are others who simply want the phone to ring, contact with the outside world. I’m very fortunate to have experienced both.

But one of the best and biggest benefits of hanging around A.R. is the help and support you get from others. When A.R. first started we had no idea how much we would learn from each other. Sure we shared and encouraged each other, swapped web site advice, exchanged farming ideas and tried to leave clever comments. But when you read a post and a spark ignites your imagination or you try a new marketing idea and the phone rings, you will know why you are spending so much time here in the Rain.

Special thanks to those of you who have shared all of your wonderful ideas with us. A special thanks to Jennifer Steck and Chrissy Harrison, and to everyone who ever shared their fortune, good nature, imagination, information, letters and advice with all of us.

To all the Newbies in the Rain, keep at it, the phone is going to ring as a direct result of being in the Rain!

In and Out of the Rain

January 10, 2008

In and Out of the Rain

The fourth quarter of the year is notoriously slow in the real estate field. And January doesn’t always start off with a bang. It’s the time of the year most agents usually try to catch their breath, spend time with the family and start planning ahead.

Some people may have noticed on my blogs that I haven’t been updating as frequently as I once had been. Nor am I commenting as often Well, there is a good reason for that. I’ve been busy. The phone has been ringing, contacts via the Rain, IDX and yard signs are at an all time high for me. I’m also turning off my computer after 6 P.M. and catching up on my reading.

And it’s funny what kind of contacts I’ve been getting and just how they are finding me. I know there will be criticism but one of my posts (Holiday Salsa) has been getting passed around and getting attention. Thank you Chris Elizabeth for the idea of blogging unusual ideas.

The other thing I’ve been successfully doing is once a month e-mailing my SOI. OK, stop saying to yourself “Duh, Dena” But I finally got myself organized enough to e-mail everybody on a regular basis. And I’m sending out listings or coming soon notices. People, who I know don’t want to buy, are e-mailing me back wether or not it’s about the e-mail they just received from me. People I never or rarely hear from are contacting me.

So I guess I’ll end this by saying thank you Active Rain and fellow bloggers. Keep your chin up and keep plugging away. You’ve heard it before but I’m going to say it again. 2008 is going to be GREAT!

Magic mirror

November 25, 2007

mirror.jpgMagic Mirror

‘Romper Bomper, Stomper Boo. Tell me, tell me true. Magic Mirror, tell me today did all my friends have fun at play? I see Michelle and John and Bill and…oh, there you are. I’ve been looking for you all these years. I see YOU!”

If the above words have a ring of familiarity to them you are probably between the ages of 35 and 50. A week or so ago I was out enjoying an adult beverage with a friend who reminded me of these words. She remembers how she wished above all wishes that the magic mirror would she her. I’m just old enough to fit into this age group and old enough to have completely forgotten the TV show.

When we write a post for our blogs or write for our web pages we are not writing in a vacuum. On a social site like Active Rain we often write for the benefit of others in our field. But who else is popping in and we are unaware?

I’m constantly amazed at people I know who will out of the blue tell me they read something I wrote. A recent post about my Thanksgiving has already provoked such a conversation. And I shouldn’t be amazed or confused by this, after all I am promoting my blog all the time.

I’d like to acknowledge and say hi to those who follow my posts on Active rain, my space, or Real Estate Colorado Style.

I see Zach, Penny, Paula, Shelley, Holli, Candice, Pam, Shawna, Mark, Colleen, Nancy, Bill, Marshall, Diane, Tammie, Dan, Pat, Don, Jason, the other Dan, Beth, Michelle, Lori, Jill, Larry

The best compliment I can receive is a referral. If you or somebody you know is thinking about buying or selling real estate it would be my privilege to help them with the process.

Benefits of Honey

November 14, 2007

                                        Benefits of Honey

(Consult your doctor and allergist. This is only one persons opinion and your results and opinions may be completely different.)

In the spring and in the fall my allergies kick into high gear. Although I am a big fan of trees my system feels like it’s being attacked. I feel like I’ve got the worst of all colds, my throat swells, my eyes tear and tissue is a valuable thing to have around. When I remember to eat honey I do feel better. But the key to my success with honey is eating it constantly, year around.

If you are planning a move out of your immediate area try eating honey prior to your move. Eating local honey from the area you are moving to can help build your immune system and make your move more comfortable.

For Allergies:It has been found drinking four tablespoons of honey mixed into a 16-ounce glass of water improved the antioxidant levels in your blood.

Honey contains bits and pieces of pollen which may help support your immune system.

Homemade Honey Recipes for Skin Care:

1. Cucumber-Honey Toner:Puree 1 cucumber in a blender and drain away the liquid. Add 2 teaspoons of honey and mix. Apply on the face and neck area with a cotton pad. Air dry it and rinse clean.2. Honey-Apple Toner:In a blender or food processor, combine 1 peeled, cored apple with a tablespoon of honey and pulse until smooth. Apply mixture to face and allow it to stay for 15 minutes, then rinse.

3. Honey-Oats Face Scrub:Combine 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon finely-ground almonds, 2 tablespoons dry oatmeal, and some lemon juice or yogurt to a luxurious and exfoliating facial scrub. Massage mixture gently onto face, then rinse with warm water.4. Gentle Honey Cleanser:Mix 1/4 cup honey, 1 tablespoon liquid soap and ½ cup glycerin (found in drug stores). Apply gently on to face using a face sponge. Rinse with warm water and pat face dry.

5. Hot Honey Bath:Perhaps the easiest beauty recipe related to honey and skin care — Add 1/4 cup of honey to your hot bath water for silky and luscious skin.6. Honey Hair Conditioning Treatment:For lustrous, silky, healthy hair and scalp, simply combine ½ cup honey and 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup olive oil. Massage scalp with this conditioner, then put on a shower cap for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.
